Private firm puts profit before patient care

A private firm that helped save an NHS hospital from being closed is now facing accusations that it is putting profits before patients.

A deal has been signed by Circle, which runs Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridgeshire, and the deal says that the first £2million that the trust annually makes will be kept by the firm.

The hospital has a debt of about £40million and critics feel that this money should be used for paying this debt or should be used to make treatments and services better.

Which? wants banks to do more to help struggling mortgage customers

Banks should do more to help their customers who are struggling due to an increase in Standard Variable Rates (SVR) on home loans, consumer watchdog “Which?” said.

According to Which?, more than one million mortgage customers are facing a massive leap in repayments over the coming twelve months.

The increase is expected to leave more than 10 per cent of home-owners in the UK too financially exhausted to be able to pay for everyday necessities such as food and toiletries.

8,000 patients sent home from hospitals from 11pm to 6am

In an attempt to free-up beds, about 8000 patients are sent home every week between 11 pm to 6 am. Following this, an urgent inquiry was yesterday launched.

According to figures, 240,000 patients were discharged in the middle of the night in 2011 and this included OAPs. NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh ordered the probe after seeing this.

A lot of pressure was put on Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to take note of this and stop it with immediate effect.

Banned' Indian-born British doctor returns to work

Despite failing basic exams, Dr Arun Rauniar, who is an Indian-born general practitioner, has been reinstated and he was banned twice by the General Medical Council, GMC.

There have been earlier cases where wrong drugs were given to patients by Rauniar and he even performed operations without having any eligibility for them.

The GMC has been approached by enraged former patients to strike Rauniar's name from the medical register. His work was also questioned by the medical director of his primary care trust along with some cognitive difficulties and behavioral issues.

Across Scotland 'dementia champions' take first step

At hospitals in Scotland, an attempt will be made to improve treatment for dementia and for this a network of 100 ‘dementia champions’ has already been formed.

From next year, anyone who is diagnosed with dementia will get personal support for at least one year and this will what the group will try.

By 2013, there will be an attempt made to increase the number of champions working.

Dementia affects about 82,000 people in Scotland and in the next 25 years this number is expected to increase by double.

GPs not confident about NHS reforms

According to an opinion poll, there has been a 50 per cent reduction in the confidence of GPs about the Government's NHS reforms when it comes to making patient care better.

It has been seen that about 12 per cent of the GPs feel that there will be an improvement in services given to health service users and two months back this percentage was 23.

It was last week only that legislation putting the shake-up into effect became law and it had to face a lot of turbulence before it got its shape as many health professionals were against it.

Sir Bobby Robson's cancer collects over £4million

Since its launch about four years ago, Sir Bobby’s Robson cancer charity has raised more than £4million.

Sir Bobby is a former England football manager and he launched the projects because he had the experience of fighting cancer. The target was set with the initial aim of raising £500,000.

The total is seen rising and this is despite Sir Bobby’s death at the age of 76 years in the year 2009.

The charity that is urging all to come forward and joining the fight against cancer has been backed by her as she joined fellow MPs at a Westminster event recently. Portsmouth death rates for vascular surgery more

Seeing high death rate among certain patients, Portsmouth's hospitals have been defended by a surgeon and this has been stated in a national report.

According to figures that were obtained by health organization, from October 2008 to September 2010, due to an abdominal aortic aneurysm or AAA, there were six deaths and they happened after these patients were operated for the disease by doctors.

People who have a swelled up large vessel that takes blood to legs or stomach are operated by vascular surgeons.
