T-Mobile’s performance boosts Deutsche Telekom’s earnings

Bonn-based telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom has reported first-quarter earnings that beat their analysts’ estimates, thanks to better-than-expected performance by its US subsidiary T-Mobile.

Deutsche Telekom’s revenue slipped 1.1 per cent to 14.43 billion euros, but earnings were at 4.48 billion euros ($5.8 billion), higher than analysts’ average projection of 4.4 billion euros.

Net earnings halved to 238 million euros, mainly due to a charge of nearly 500 million euros related to job cuts.

High cost of new iPad components drives down profit margins

In its comprehensive report released on Friday, market research firm IHS iSuppli has revealed that a tear-down of Apple’s new iPad has shown that the high cost of the tablet’s components has resulted in lower the profit margins for Apple, as compared to the margins from the preceding iPad model.

The iSuppli report detailed the component costs linked to the development of the new iPad; and disclosed that the high prices of some of the key components – specifically the Retina Display - of the tablet are apparently costing Apple a substantial amount in its per-unit profit.

AT&T’s heavy data users to face throttling

US network provider AT&T has clarified the limitations of its "unlimited" data plans, saying after using a certain amount of data customers would experience throttled Internet service.

AT&T confirmed that anyone who gobbles up more than 3GB of Internet data in a single cycle would experience slowed down Internet speeds or would have to pay extra.

The country's second-largest wireless carrier announced the new policy apparently to target customers who consume a lot of Internet data, usually through heavy viewing of videos and other content on their mobile phones.

Apple iPad 3 is rumored for March 7 launch

According to a Monday report on the iMore website, the much-rumored and highly-anticipated next-generation iPad – the iPad 3, as it is referred to in the Web reports – will likely be unveiled on Wednesday, March 7, at a special event.

Citing “sources who have been reliable in the past,” the iMore report revealed that the new, forthcoming version of the iPad will boast a Retina Display with a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution and will run a quad-cord processor. The new iPad will also “possibly” be capable of “4G LTE networking.”
